SHENZHEN, Jan 18, 2010 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) --

Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. reportedly participated in the first-round bidding for Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating)'s broadband & mobile network division.

However, the leading Chinese networking and telecommunications equipment supplier made no official comment on the saying.

Motorola recently started to auction off its broadband and mobile network division. The first round of bidding has come to an end, disclosed a person in the know. Potential buyers offered a price range between USD 3 billion and USD 4 billion, which is still lower than the mobile phone maker's expectation of USD 4.5 billion.

In fact, Motorola was rumored seeking buyers for the broadband and mobile network division at a price of USD 4.5 billion as early as November 2009. Investing banks, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, as well as Centerview Partners, offer suggestion for the deal.

At least, two companies participated in the first-round bidding, disclosed the Wall Street Journal. One of the bidders was the US-based ARRIS Group, Inc. and the other one was China's Huawei. With a market value of USD 1.4 billion or so, ARRIS probably teamed up with private equity firms, noted the well-informed person.

Due to the lower-than-expected offer, Motorola brews to reevaluate its plan for spinning off. The company's board of directors will hold meetings at the end of January 2010 to decide whether to continue selling the division or not.

The to-be-sold division mainly supplied voice, broadband, and TV service equipment for telecom carriers and cable TV companies, and produces set top boxes, cable TV infrastructure as well as networking equipment.

The division gained sales revenues of USD 2.01 billion in the third quarter of 2009, taking up 36% of the company's total revenues. Operating profit arrived at USD 199 million. The sale of the division can help Motorola reinvigorate its mobile phone business, believed industry watchers.

Motorola says it is not willing to sell the division to a single private equity firm. Several private equity firms were said to have quit in the first-round bidding.

If Huawei acquires the division, the Chinese company can improve its brand value and enhance penetration into the European and US markets via Mororola's distribution channels, said analysts.

Huawei saw its sales revenue for the full year 2009 rise 26.5% from USD 17 billion in the previous year to USD 21.5 billion, in spite of a global economic recession.

Sales value in the year exceeded USD 30 billion, up 28.8% from USD 23.3 billion in 2008, said the Shenzhen-based company, noting that the result is the best one ever released.
